Cuban Revolution Project - Development Work

On the way to my final piece I explored various typefaces to find a suitable one for a revolution poster. I then began putting sketches of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara together who were pioneers in the Cuban revolution and symbols of revolutionary spirit.

Cuban Revolution Poster - Final Piece

After visiting an exhibition of Emory Douglas's work held at Urbis, I created my own poster for the Cuban Revolution. It features quotes and the word 'Revolution' in their native language.

Quotation Brief - Hand Finished Pieces

"A prisoner of war is man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him".

Using various media, I worked on representing certain words in different ways, using cutouts, paints, inks, pencils etc. I tried to visually represent the meanings of different words throughout my quote. The nature of my quote meant that it made more sense to hand-finish my final piece. Using red ink and flicking it onto the page, I gave the impression that blood was being splashed.

CD Packaging Re-Design Project

I was allocated a CD previously unknown and unseen by me, and had to design new packaging artwork. This gave me the opportunity to explore various ideas and concepts. I had to generate my initial ideas from the music alone, rather than comparing my design with the original, which would limit my though process. I tried to avoid all of the cliches in the genre.

CD Packaging Re-Design Project

Shown here is the front and back cover of the CD packaging. The 'TV heads' portray the meaning behind Track 3: "Television, The Drug of the Nation", which explains how we are controlled and manipulated by the television. The coloured bars have been used to represent the 'no signal' screen displayed in TV headquarters when signal is lost.

Obesity Programme Advert

In this piece I tried to create the illusion that the burger was in his stomach, basing around the theory around the saying "you are what you eat". This also implies that the insides of the person are unhealthy and greasy as a result of a bad diet. The head and identity of the person is hidden, therefore allowing anyone to relate to the image.

Photography Exhibition Poster For Urbis

Using my own images I created a photomontage/digital illustration to show some of the famous landmarks around Manchester city centre. I wanted to make the final piece seem very illustrated but to still compliment the actual photography in the exhibition.

Classic Typface Composition - Bodoni

Choosing a classic typeface, I created a composition using ornaments, text and images. The composition was intended to celebrate the style of Bodoni's typeface. What attracted me to the typeface was the high stroke contrast and quite modern - looking serifs. I am impressed by how contemporary the fonts still seem despite being designed over 200 years ago. I also enjoyed exploring the many ornaments Bodoni's designs had to offer.

Blast Magazine Cover Story DPS

The cover story focuses on the well known UK Rap Artist Bashy. Contacts are provided by the co-founder of the magazine.

Blast Magazine Issue 1 Cover

This is the cover of my magazine which is due to be published in March. I work on the magazine in my spare time and have designed the majority of the first issue.

Logo Project - Benjamin Franklin - Finished Piece

In the finished piece I tried to show the concept of an optician's eye chart and I also included the use of the focal length 'f' for effect.

Logo Project - Benjamin Franklin - Development Work

The purpose of this brief was to represent a prolific person/organization through the medium of a logo. I chose Benjamin Franklin and based my project around his invention of bi-focals.
